Google Ads Conversion Tracking

Report sales and leads directly to Google Ads with the ad click attached, so Smart Bidding has something real to optimize toward.

If you buy Google Ads, this is what tells Google which clicks turned into money. Without it, Google is optimizing blind β€” it can see who clicked, but not who bought.

ℹ️ Note: Optional. Skip this entirely if you don’t run Google Ads.

Two ways to do it

Import from Analytics (free, no setup). Link Google Ads to your Analytics property and import your key events as conversions. Since provisioning already marks your conversions for you, this works immediately. Good enough for most stores.

Dedicated conversion tags (this article). Report conversions straight to Google Ads with the ad click ID attached. Better because:

  • Faster and more accurate attribution β€” matched at the moment of conversion, rather than imported later
  • Foundation for Enhanced Conversions β€” recovers attribution that cookie restrictions would otherwise lose
  • Remarketing audiences built directly from site activity

πŸ’‘ Tip: Start with the Analytics link. Move to dedicated tags when your spend justifies squeezing out the extra accuracy.

What you need from Google Ads

Two things, both from Google Ads β†’ Goals β†’ Conversions.

  1. Conversion ID β€” starts with AW-, one per Ads account, shared by every conversion action
  2. Conversion label β€” a short code, one per conversion action. A different label for Purchase than for Lead

Setting it up

  1. Open Marketing β†’ Analytics and find the Google Ads section.
  2. Paste your Conversion ID into the field β€” AW-123456789.
  3. Add your labels as JSON, keyed by the storefront event that should report each one:
{
  "purchase": "abc123XYZ",
  "generate_lead": "def456ABC",
  "phone_click": "ghi789JKL"
}
  1. Save, then re-provision GTM. The labels determine which tags get built, so this step is required.

Valid event keys: purchase, generate_lead, phone_click, sign_up, begin_checkout, add_to_cart, search. Anything else is skipped and reported in the provisioning log.

⚠️ Warning: Leaving the Conversion ID blank means no Google Ads tags are created at all, regardless of labels. Filling in the ID but no labels creates remarketing but no conversions β€” you’ll see a warning in the log.

What gets built

Tag Purpose
Conversion tag (one per label) Reports that conversion action
Remarketing Builds audiences for retargeting
Conversion Linker Stores the ad click ID in a first-party cookie

ℹ️ Note: The Conversion Linker matters more than it sounds. The ad click ID arrives only in the landing URL β€” without the Linker storing it, a purchase five minutes later has nothing left to attribute to. It’s created automatically.

Purchase conversions carry revenue, currency, and the order number. Google uses the order number to deduplicate, so a customer refreshing the confirmation page won’t book the sale twice.

Changing things later

Change Re-provision?
Conversion ID No β€” takes effect on the next page load
Conversion labels Yes β€” labels decide which tags exist

Verifying

Google Ads conversions take a few hours to appear β€” don’t panic at an empty report immediately after setup.

  1. Place a test order, or wait for a real one
  2. Check Google Ads β†’ Goals β†’ Conversions the following day
  3. Confirm the conversion action shows recent activity

If nothing arrives after 24 hours, work through Verify Your Tracking Works β€” a Google Ads conversion can only fire if the underlying event does.
