Per-block overrides

Make one section deviate from the global theme without changing the rest of the site.

Sometimes you want one section to stand out — a dark band between two light sections, or a brand-colored callout — without touching your global theme. That’s what per-block overrides are for. They’re edited in the page builder, not the theme settings.

Where to find them

In the page builder, select a block and open its Theme Overrides panel (at the bottom of the settings). Full walkthrough: Appearance & Theme Overrides.

What you can do

  • Color Scheme presets — Inverse (dark band), Brand color, Muted tint, or Theme default (inherit). Presets follow your theme and adapt to dark mode automatically.
  • Custom — set specific Surface / Text / Brand colors, edited per mode (Light and Dark separately) so a custom light color never bleeds into dark mode. Each swatch has a Reset back to theme default.
  • Section Padding override for just that block.

How it fits the cascade

An override only affects the one block it’s on, and it sits at the top of the resolution order:

  1. This block’s override ← wins, for this block only
  2. Your global theme setting
  3. The built-in default

So the rest of the site keeps your theme; only the block you touched changes.

💡 Tip: If you find yourself giving many blocks the same override, that’s a sign it should be a global theme change instead (How theming works) — set it once and drop the per-block overrides.

ℹ️ Note: Blocks nested inside a column don’t have their own Theme Overrides — they inherit the look of the band they’re placed in.

That’s the theme system end to end. Back to How theming works or the Website Builder.
