Promotions overview

What the promotions engine can do β€” discount types, targeting, guardrails, and how codes behave at checkout.

Promotions let you offer discount codes on your storefront β€” a percentage off, a dollar amount off, or free shipping β€” with precise control over which products qualify, who can redeem, and how deep the discount can cut into your margin. You manage everything from one place, and every redemption is recorded against the order for accurate margin reporting.

Where to find it

In the dashboard sidebar under GROWTH β†’ Marketing:

  • Promotions β€” discount codes (/dashboard/dealer/marketing/promotions)
  • Signup Popups β€” the account-signup popup that mints personal welcome codes (see Signup popup)

ℹ️ Note: These menu items are permission-gated. If a team member can’t see them, their role needs the Promotions / Popups capability β€” see Roles & permissions.

What a promotion can do

Capability Options
Discount type Percentage off Β· Fixed amount off Β· Free shipping
Applies to Whole order Β· Specific products Β· Shipping only
Product targeting Include by product, category, brand, or tag; exclude specific products. See Targeting rules
Conditions Minimum spend, minimum quantity, start/end dates, skip items already on sale
Usage limits Total redemptions cap, per-customer cap
Margin protection Dealer-wide margin floor with per-promotion overrides β€” trim or reject discounts that would cut too deep. See Margin protection

How codes behave at checkout

  • Shoppers enter the code in the cart or at checkout. The discount line appears immediately and the order total updates before payment.
  • One code per order. Entering a second code replaces the first β€” codes never stack.
  • Codes are stored in ALL CAPS; the shopper can type them in any case.
  • The discount is calculated server-side on the live cart β€” prices, targeting, limits, and margin floors are re-checked at payment time, so an expired or exhausted code can’t slip through a stale browser tab.
  • Tax is calculated on the discounted amounts.
  • Each line item on the order records its share of the discount, so margin reports stay accurate per product.

Two kinds of codes

Shared codes are the ones you create by hand β€” SPRING10, printed on a flyer or sent in a campaign. Anyone with the code can use it (subject to your limits).

Personal welcome codes are minted automatically by the Signup popup β€” each new customer gets a unique, single-use code locked to their account. Even if it’s shared, nobody else can redeem it. These appear in your promotions data but you don’t create them by hand.
